Something a Little Different From Everyday Breakfast Foods

Nuuanu Okazuya Food

Take a good look at this pic. Now, take an even better look. What does this look like its worth? Guess again. Maybe we should stop this nonsense because we will be here forever. That plate cost me $18 and some change. Yes… it did. But here is the amazing part, it tasted worst than it looks.

I often find myself at Nuuanu Kazuya. Maybe it is because of the convenience, or maybe because it is something a little different from everyday breakfast foods. Usually, I am satisfied with what they have. But this time around, I do not know wtf happened. I am baffled at what my plate not only looked like but also tasted like. The salmon was seriously the driest salmon I have ever eaten in my life. The canned salmon they have at Costco was way better than this crap. Just because you put furikake, doesn’t make it a “winnah”. The chicken katsu was probably the thinnest chicken with the thickest katsu in katsu history. I even asked my fellow ninja-mates about this in Japan and they almost sliced my throat for showing them something so disgusting. Luckily, I live in Hawaii. So they did not want to fly down here just for that, but they did give me a warning.

I don’t want to bad mouth Nuuanu Okazuya too badly, but this plate was one where they should stab themselves for. Hopefully, this isn’t the start of downgrading like a lot of other establishments do. If it is, it’ll be Kazuya vanish in no time. I won’t spend too much time on this review, it already cost me about $20.

The corner café and bar

Now now now, what do we have here? A new contender in the downtown hipster scene? I think it might be too good for some of these tight jeans and fake glasses-wearing kids. And believe me, they might even be too scared to step off of Hotel St. late at night and venture another block just into the real Chinatown.

This place is fairly new and I believe their kitchen is even newer. Now, to be honest, I do know the owner of this joint but I am not writing this to be biased in any way like you see from all those P.O.S. ass-kissing reviews you can read on Star-Advertiser. So let’s get down to business.

The ONLY reason I will ever want to frequent a bar is for their food. If their food sucks, there is no way in hell I am going back there. Of course, there is that other reason…. but I will plead the 5th on that! When John (the owner) told me they have good food, I believe him. I went to a BBQ of his a few years back and I was impressed with what he had prepared. So I know he has decent taste in food.

While waiting for our other friend to arrive, we started off with some Spicy Tuna Nachos (Pictured). And god damn! This was some badass stuff right here! I tried a couple of variations of this at other establishments for a much higher price, but I got to say this little bad boy takes first place. Now the bad part? This was so damn good, I forgot to take pics of the other food we ordered because now I couldn’t wait to try everything else. And if you have any trust in me, you must try this place out. And get your muthaf’ in a grind on.

Not to mention, this place isn’t too crowded or too noisy, which I very much like. And the people that were here are the downtown business people. But writing this review will be bittersweet because I know when the word gets out, this place will be packed and hard to get a seat but will be very good for the establishment. Until then, go now and enjoy!
